Your Emergency Supply Kit Checklist

7/10/2015 (Permalink)

Emergency Supply Kit This off-the-shelf Red Cross emergency kit and others like it are portable. They contain items you would require to survive for 72 hours.

Most storm, fire, and water damage happens unexpectedly. So emergencies catch people in Connecticut unprepared. You’re smart to have an emergency supply bag or container already stocked with the basics you need should an emergency happen. The Connecticut Guide to Emergency Preparedness advises all of us to have an emergency supply kit or evacuation pack that includes the following:

•    Water in jugs or bottles. Your emergency water supply should be at least one gallon for every person for each day.
•    Food in cans or sealed packages. Soup and tuna are good examples.
•    Cooking and eating supplies: a manual can opener, paper plates, plastic utensils, and a small grill.
•    Bleach and an eyedropper to treat water.
•    Paper towels, toilet paper, soap.
•    Battery-powered radio, flashlights, cell phone, and extra batteries.
•    Blankets or sleeping bags and pillows.
•    Extra clothing for everyone in the family.
•    Baby and child items like diapers, games, toys, and books.
•    A first-aid kit. It should include medicines (prescriptions, fever reducers, aspirin), eyeglasses and supplies, list of your doctors with phone numbers, and medical supplies you require (insulin syringes or colostomy supplies for example.)
•    Garbage bags and cleaning supplies.
•    Pet supplies (food, water, pet carrier, medicines, collar, leash, ID tags, immunization records, etc.)
•    Extra set of car keys, credit cards, cash, and important information like your social security numbers and birth certificates.
•    Plastic sheeting and duct tape.
•    Pictures of family members and pets in case you are separated and need help looking for them.
