How to Prepare for Hurricane Season

7/21/2021 (Permalink)

A house damaged by a hurricane With hurricane season starting in north central Connecticut, be prepared for the storms with these tips from SERVPRO of Bloomfield/Enfield.

Summer and fall are known as hurricane season in many parts of the U.S. Each year, it seems like there are more storms, the storms are more powerful and damaging—and the season starts earlier and goes on longer. That means that you need to be prepared for hurricanes that might park over your home or business and drop lots of rain while the winds whirl—and that means increased property damage!

This summer and fall, make sure you prepare your home or business to withstand more wind and more water from more hurricanes. Here are several important steps to take when a hurricane is forecasted for your area.

Reinforce Your Structure

Few weather events can cause the kind of damage that a hurricane can, with its high wind speeds and wind-driven rain. If a hurricane is on its way, check these parts of your house or business.

  • Roof: The winds of a hurricane can peel some or all of your roof right off. Even just a few missing shingles will allow water to penetrate your home or business. Before the storm, check for missing or damaged shingles, and consider hiring a roofing pro to repair or replace them.
  • Gutters: A well-working gutter will route water from your roof and away from your home. Look at your gutters before the storm: are they securely attached? are they unclogged? Again, a roofer can do this and perform any needed repairs.
  • Windows: Windows are particularly vulnerable to hurricane damage, so you may want to cover them, either with plywood or hurricane shutters.
  • Lawn and Driveway: If large objects aren’t secured in place, they can be thrown around by the strong winds, potentially smashing into your home or business or other property. If you can store objects inside (garbage cans and outdoor furniture, for example), do so. Otherwise lash everything down.

Keep Your Family Safe and Healthy

The strong winds of a hurricane can cause power outages that can last for a week or more. It’s wise to set your refrigerator and freezer to the lowest possible temperature before the storm arrives. Food will keep for 4 hours in an unopened refrigerator and will remain frozen for 48 hours in a full freezer.

Protect the health and safety of your family by putting together a cache of food, water and other supplies. This should include:

  • Nonperishable food to last three days or more
  • A gallon of water for each person per day
  • An emergency kit that contains:
    —First aid supplies
    —Flashlights and batteries
    —Charged cell phones
    —Pain relievers and essential medications
—Important paperwork (for identification and insurance claims)
    —Cash
