Don’t Let Snow and Ice Damage Your Enfield Home

2/10/2021 (Permalink)

A structure collapsed under the weight of snow A storm with lots of snow and ice can can cause water and structural damage to your house. Follow our tips to protect your Enfield home.

Winter storms can damage your Enfield home in many different ways: water damage from flooding, wind damage and structural damage from the weight of snow and ice. (And of course, with prolonged cold temperatures can come severe water damage from frozen and burst pipes, too!) Read on to learn ways to keep your home safe when a big winter storm is on the way.

Keep the Water Out

One of the primary ways to keep water from entering your home is to make sure it has somewhere else to go. That’s why it’s a good idea to have proper grading that slants away from your foundation, and downspouts that direct water several feet away from your home. Follow the same principles when you’re shoveling or snowblowing: pile the snow at least several feet away from your foundation rather than at the base, so that when the snow starts melting, it doesn’t overwhelm your home’s defenses.

If an ice dam forms at the edge of your roof, follow our advice on ways to safely clear the ice dam and avoid water damage.

Protect Your Structure

Too much snow on your roof can cause it to leak or collapse. And heavy snow mounding up in your gutters can tear them from your home. Prevent this by preparing before the storm: clean your gutters and check your roof for any missing or damaged shingles or damaged flashing around vents and chimney. Repair damage, replace missing shingles and reseal any gaps. During or after the storm, use a roof rake to remove heavy snow from your roof and gutters.

You may find after the storm that your garage door has frozen shut. Don’t attack it with a shovel and don’t try to force it open with the automatic door opener. Instead, disengage the opener, clean away the snow and ice, then lift the door by hand.

Finally, if you have any tree branches that are close to your house or a power line, trim them back before the storm hits to prevent them from drooping or breaking off entirely.
